Module Aims

This module aims to enable students to explore and interrogate some core management models and theories associated with leadership, management, effective communication and organisational change. Various scenarios and examples will be used to explore the strengths and limitations of employing various theories to develop and improve individual leadership skills for Public Health practice. The module aims to support students to identify ideas and preferences from a variety of sources to inform and facilitate their own professional development as a future leader in Public Health. 
This module is compulsory for those in the EoE Public Health Training scheme as part of preparation for the FPH Diplomate exam. Other students are very welcome to join. No prior leadership experience is necessary – the module is intended as an introduction to leadership and change management theory. 

Module Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to: 

1. Describe and critically evaluate frameworks, principles and models associated with: leadership; creativity and innovation; communication and conflict negotiation; team working; and change management. 
2. Critically evaluate the applicability of a theory or model to a chosen Public Health context and evaluate its potential use in improving health and wellbeing. 
3. Effectively communicate as a leader or advocate in a Public Health context to a range of stakeholders, both verbally and in writing. 
4. Demonstrate an ability to reflect on your own leadership preferences and impact on others and identify opportunities for personal learning and development as a leader. 

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module. Students may find it useful to have studied the Principles of Public Health, Policy and Public Health, and Social and Spatial Epidemiology modules to offer some background to public health cases under discussion. 

Teaching Strategy

The module will be delivered using a combination of short lectures, workshops, small-group exercises, and class discussions. Face:face teaching will be employed to discuss and critique the theories, with background reading and preparation required prior to all sessions for students to familiarise themselves with the key elements of the theories under discussion. 

Assessment

The module will be assessed with a 1500 word critical essay, in which you will be asked to describe a model and critically consider how it could be applied to a specific Public Health situation; plus a 500 word individual reflection on your own evolving leadership development, skills and views throughout the module.
