Module Aims
This module focuses specifically on applied research in primary care. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the primary care research context and the role and importance of primary care research. Using exemplars from primary care it will illustrate the range of research designs used in applied clinical research, including approaches for participant recruitment and retention and long-term follow-up. The module will also equip students with the practical skills to design and deliver applied research.
Module Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- Make a coherent argument for the role and importance of primary care research
- Demonstrate awareness of the practicalities of doing applied health research, particularly within primary care settings
- Describe the range of research designs used in applied health research, and be able to provide a justification for using a particular research design to address a given research question
- Understand and explain how research within primary care can contribute to improving the quality and safety of care, including issues relating to the standardisation, harmonisation, replication and scaling of successful interventions and approaches.
- Appreciate how implementation science can be used to support and evaluate implementation of evidence-based practice and clinical research within clinical settings
- Design trial documents, including patient facing information and data collection tools
- Apply for regulatory approvals
